Friends Group Survey

The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF) is conducting a survey to compile information about all types of Friends groups across the country to share the results back with groups like yours. In addition, we ask for feedback about the services and resources ALTAFF provides to our members and affiliates. Your feedback will help us develop future materials and resources to help your Friends group succeed.

The survey should be completed only one time per Friends group by the person with the most knowledge of your Friends group. This may be a member of the Friends board, a paid staff member (library or Friends group), or the library director. Click here to begin the survey.

Microsoft Word and Excel 2007 Training

MVLS will be offering training on Microsoft Word and Excel 2007 as part of this year's LSTA grant. We will be offering 4 sessions, all with the same content. It is presumed that attendees will already have a basic understanding of the functions of Word and Excel. This training is designed to educate users on the new features and changes that are in the 2007 versions of the software - these are not introductory trainings. Sessions are appropriate for staff who use Word/Excel themselves, and for any staff who fields questions about features of these products from the public. Training will be provided by professional trainers from MicroKnowledge Computer Training and Consulting in Latham.

These will be hands-on sessions, with a maximum of 12 participants per session. At this time, we can accomodate a total of 2 people per library/branch. If you wish to send more than 2 people to these sessions, please complete a form for them and they will be placed on a waiting list. We will do our best to accomodate everyone.

Grant Opportunity - Best Buy Community Grants

The Best Buy Community Grants Program provides support to nonprofit organizations that are located within 50 miles of a Best Buy store or distribution center. Grants averaging $3,000 to $5,000 will promote programs and services that provide opportunities for young teens in the areas of education, life skills, leadership skills, and relationship development. Special consideration will be given to programs that serve a diverse population, build skills in early adolescents (primarily ages 13-18), show positive results against a demonstrated community need, and reach at-risk children in working families. The grant application process will open on June 1 and close on July 1, 2010. Visit the Best Buy website to review the program guidelines.
