SnapShotNY - February 16, 2010

Mohawk Valley Library System is participating in SnapShotNY, a statewide effort to illustrate just how essential and busy libraries are. Using statistics, pictures, videos, and user comments, the New York Library Association will use this information to make our case to the state legislature about the value and need for libraries and against further cutbacks in aid.

We need your help!

On Tuesday, February 16, 2010, MVLS is asking all libraries and branches to keep statistics on:
· How many patrons visit your library
· How many people use your public computers
· How many reference questions are asked
· How many children participate in library programs (including school visits)
· How many adults participate in library programs
· Your total circulation for the day
· How many hits your website received
Please forward these statistics to MVLS by Monday, February 22, 2010 and we will send them to NYLA along with any digital photos you take on that day showing your library use.

Polaris statistics will provide the total circulation and, if your library is using Cassie or Cybrarian, the day’s total computer use can be easily pulled. The rest is simple statistics-keeping that can be used as a sample for your own advocacy efforts.

This information will be compiled and showcased on Library Lobby Day, Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in Albany.

MVLS is also sending posters to support the Libraries: Essential Campaign. The campaign is intended to mobilize library users to go to the www.protectnylibraries.org website and get involved in library advocacy. Please encourage your users, staff, friends, and yourself to sign the online petition at that address.
